An
ebook cover image plays a crucial role in your ebook’s success.
An effective, high-quality cover inspires trust, while something
that looks thrown together has the opposite affect. Your ebook
cover graphic must look professional, have smooth edges, and use
the right colors and images. Graphics, colors and text affect
the quality of your product image.
The
following tips will help you design an effective ebook cover:
Images
•
Convey the book’s topic at a glance. Carefully select your
images to best represent your ebook and support your sales message.
You can do that by choosing images that are related to your book's
topic. If your book targets parents with children of pre-school
age, then obviously do not use a photo that shows older children.
•
Make your book cover unique with a custom design. Be original;
stand out from your competition. Be inspired, but certainly don't
copy someone else's design.
•
Use clipart sparingly. The important thing is to use graphics
that support your sales message. Don't clutter your ebook image
with graphics that have nothing to do with the content.
•
Don't use too many background graphics. The title is the most
important element, and the rest of the design simply supports
what the title states.
•
Photographs often work well for ebook covers, but be sure you
choose photos that accurately depict what your book is about.
•
Keep it simple. Simplicity is the key to powerful design.
•
Avoid large open spaces. They can be as distracting as too many
graphic images.
•
Use ALT tags with all of your images to improve your search engine
positioning. Search engines can't read images, so ALT tags tell
them what the image is about. Use your main keyword in your ALT
tags.
Colors
•
Select colors that work with your web site colors. I recommend
designing the web images first, then use a color theme for the
web site that works with the images. If you already have a web
site, tell your designer so he/she can select colors that will
work for your site.
•
Make sure that the colors you use on your ebook cover or software
box reflect the subject of your book. For instance, if your book
is about getting involved in high-energy physical activities,
then you would choose vibrant colors that exude energy (bright
red, for example) rather than pale, washed out colors.
•
Use text colors that contrast, but do not clash with your background
to make your title and benefits stand out.
Text/Fonts
•
Your book’s title must be focused and appropriate for the
target audience. Provide benefits!
•
Use fonts that are readable in a small size. Arial, Impact, and
Futura are great fonts for your ebook.
•
Limit the amount of text. Because your ebook cover image is likely
to be quite small, the text on the cover is also going to be small.
The less text you use, the larger and more readable your text
will be. If you include too much text, your font size will be
smaller and your text will be unreadable. Therefore, limit the
amount of text to what's important: the title, subtitle, and perhaps
the author’s name and web address.
•
Use fonts that are appropriate for the subject matter of your
book and for your audience.
A high-quality 3D ebook cover or product box will inspire confidence
and your prospects will feel more comfortable buying from you.
There is little doubt that a quality cover image will increase
your sales. In fact, it is likely that it will double or even
triple your sales.
Combining
layout, graphics, text and colors into a unique design requires
some thought. Mediocre design falls short of building the kind
of confidence that increases sales. In fact, a poorly designed
book cover can have negative results.
